Stargate: Atlantis - Trinity

So, I watched the latest Stargate: Atlantis episode last night, and I'm left with one thing.

I really, really want to see the apology scene between MacKay & Zelenka. Rodney's toss-away line about having apologized to him just isn't enough.

This is how fanfic writers get started, isn't it? I can see how the scene would start - there would have to be coffee, from the secret stash of good stuff that you know Rodney's got. And there would have to be much, much grovelling. But I've really got nothing else. I think I might have to try, though...

That's exactly what bothers me, though. Rodney *is* the smallest person in the room, but the dialogue *forces* his being Canadian to be bigger than it is. "Zed-PM" rather than everyone else's "Zee-PM?" It's a continuous reminder, both for US and Canadian viewers. No, I'm convinced that this is deliberate, and is maintained to make fun of Canadians.

As for Rodney being way over the line, it was... Interesting. I seem to be using that word a lot today :) He was very much affected by the death of Collins, and has been pushed not into overconfidence, but into a conviction that he *has* to succeed, to make Collins' death meaningful.

What I find unbelievable is his attitude afterwards, during the argument in Weare's office. Frankly, I've always found his character to be the less consistent and believable of all.

I'll agree that the constant small reminders that Rodney's Canadian are deliberate, but I don't really think it's to make fun of Canadians. I think it's because there is no easy way to tell that he's Canadian unless the writers keep dropping it in. Carson Beckett has an accent (as do Zelenka and Grodin, for that matter), so they have an easy short-hand for "non-American". Speech patterns are the easiest way to distinguish nationalities, so Rodney uses "Zed" and the occasional hockey reference to accomplish the same thing. Hey, at least they don't have him dropping an "eh?" on the end of every sentence.

I think they want to keep the idea that the Atlantis team is multi-national in viewers' minds.

Besides, it lets them have Rodney take pot-shots at American death penalty and gun-control politics, which I'm always in favour of. *g*

I think you are both reading way to much into this but I have to agree with you Caryn in that they are trying to keep the eye on the "multi-national" thing. The patches on each of their shoulders shows that in fine style, as well as the fact that Zelenka slips into his national language every now and again such as he did in the last ep. where Rodney was sharing his brain, and Zelenka got pissed with him.

Between those two shows I think it was a set up to show just how the two of them interact and to show that the Rodney character is changing. Its good development. I welcome the next show and hope they continue his development.

I hated the character on SG1 but now I can accept and appreciate him for the intelligent person that he is being made out to be. As with most supper smart people they feel the need to influence others to their own ideals and that they are always right even when they are wrong. I think we are going to see a strong change in the character over the next few shows.
