Hot Earl Summer

Hot Earl Summer by Erica Ridley is $3.99! This is book five in The Wild Wynchesters series. The heroine is a bodyguard and the hero is impersonating his cousin. Have you read this one?

Bold, curvy Elizabeth Wynchester loves cuddling hedgehogs almost as much as she adores vanquishing villains with the sharp blade concealed inside her cane. Despite others’ opinions about her body and gender, nothing will stop her from seeing justice done. When her next mission drops her at the dastardly Earl of Densmore’s castle, she’s prepared to duel like gentlemen—only to be locked inside! Her trusty sword cannot defeat the castle’s hidden traps… or protect her heart from the devilishly handsome rogue guarding the keep.

When reclusive inventor Stephen Lenox agreed to impersonate his cousin for a few days, he didn’t expect the earl to vanish altogether. Nor could Stephen predict mounting death threats… or the arrival of a beguiling, blade-wielding spinster who declares herself his new bodyguard. As the earl’s enemies lay siege to the castle, Stephen fights his way past Elizabeth’s defenses. She’ll share his bed, but when the adventure concludes, she vows to sever their affair. Unless he can somehow convince a swashbuckling siren to surrender her heart…

Love and Other Disasters

RECOMMENDED: Love & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly is $2.99! This is book one in the Nashville Love series, and the other books are also discounted. Tara and Carrie did a joint review and gave it a B+:

Tara: Overall, I really enjoyed this one! Dahlia and London were such wonderful characters, and I’m a big fan of cooking shows, so I know I’ll be reading Love and Other Disasters again. I’ll just be sure to stock snacks next time, because reading about so much amazing food made me hungry.

Carrie: I was delighted with this book overall. The supporting characters were fun (or loathsome, as the plot demanded). The character development was realistic and powerful. The romance was sexy and I can totally picture Dahlia and London as an old couple on a porch somewhere — I was invested in them for the long haul. This will be one of my comfort re-reads for sure!

The first openly nonbinary contestant on America’s favorite cooking show falls for their clumsy competitor in this delicious romantic comedy debut that USA Today hailed as “an essential read.”

Recently divorced and on the verge of bankruptcy, Dahlia Woodson is ready to reinvent herself on the popular reality competition show Chef’s Special. Too bad the first memorable move she makes is falling flat on her face, sending fish tacos flying—not quite the fresh start she was hoping for. Still, she’s focused on winning, until she meets someone she might want a future with more than she needs the prize money.

After announcing their pronouns on national television, London Parker has enough on their mind without worrying about the klutzy competitor stationed in front of them. They’re there to prove the trolls—including a fellow contestant and their dad—wrong, and falling in love was never part of the plan.

As London and Dahlia get closer, reality starts to fall away. Goodbye, guilt about divorce, anxiety about uncertain futures, and stress from transphobia. Hello, hilarious shenanigans on set, wedding crashing, and spontaneous dips into the Pacific. But as the finale draws near, Dahlia and London’s steamy relationship starts to feel the heat both in and outside the kitchen—and they must figure out if they have the right ingredients for a happily ever after.

Forged by Magic

Forged by Magic by Jenna Wolfhart is $1.99! We mentioned this one in Hide Your Wallet and on Cover Awe. I definitely purchased this one based on the cover. Did any of you pick it up for that reason?

A heartwarming, feel-good fantasy romance…with a helping of spice and only a pinch of danger.

Trapped in a tower by the emperor who conquered her homeland, Daella yearns for an escape. But as one of the few half-orcs left in the world, she knows she’ll never be free, much less find her own happily ever after.

Destiny takes an unexpected turn when the emperor offers her a deal. To earn her freedom, she must journey to the mysterious Isles of Fable and track down wielders of outlawed dragon magic. Eager to seize her chance, Daella agrees.

When a brutal storm tosses her ship off course, she washes up on the wrong island—right at the feet of Rivelin, a gruff but handsome elven blacksmith, who seems more likely to stab her than help her. To her surprise, he offers her shelter until the next ship passes through in six weeks’ time.

Daella soon realizes he’s hiding something big. It could be the very magic she’s been tasked to hunt down—the key to her long-awaited freedom. But as they bicker over the flames of his forge, her heart kindles with something she’s never felt before.

When his secrets finally come to light, Daella must decide what’s more her freedom from the wicked crown or the desires of her heart.

Forged by Magic is a complete, stand-alone fantasy romance novel set in the whimsical world of Falling for Fables.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

RECOMMENDED: A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is $2.99! This one was recommended to Carrie and she really enjoyed it, giving the book an A-:

I enjoyed the way this book both used and subverted Beauty and the Beast tropes. There’s a good blend of angst and humor and worldbuilding.

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Thanks to Jen B. for submitting this interesting take on rereading:

This is very random, but I thought of a topic for the SBTB editors to bat around: I know you’ve done comfort reads and favorite re-reads, but does anyone have a book that you read at such a perfect time in your life that you won’t re-read it, because it will never be as good? I had just moved to a new state, the pandemic lockdowns started the day after I arrived, I was in a half-furnished apartment, and I read Evvie Drake Starts Over. It was such a gentle, healing novel about finding yourself, and it was exactly what I needed. While I’m a big novel re-reader, I’ve never touched this one again because I don’t think it will ever hit me with that much force again. Does anyone else have a book like this? Or is this a me thing?

Charms for the Easy Life
A | BN | K | AB
Sarah: It’s like the opposite of “in case of emergency, break glass” books – the “a perfect experience, place this behind glass”

In college we had a tiny shelf of popular novels (it was a tiny school) and there were occasional Elizabeth Lowell, Amanda Quick and Nora Roberts novels. Maybe 4? Not many.

But one day I picked up Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye Gibbons.

I don’t remember a single thing about this book except the tranquil and hopeful feelings that it left me with when I was done

If I went back now 30 years later, this book might not work for me at all. I just remember the experience of having it ease a considerable amount of stress at a time when I needed comfort.

I’ve never read it again.

The Bride
A | BN | K | AB
Amanda: TW for depression

I’m not a re-reader typically, so I think this is an interesting way to view the decision not to reread books. I do worry that some of my favorites won’t hold up and I’m fine to just preserve that singular reading experience in my mind.

For me, I think I’d pick The Bride by Julie Garwood for my top spot of “perfect experience place behind this glass.” I was really deep into my depression and it was the year I read 212 books because all I did was read and make daily trips to pick up my library holds. (Shout out to the Alachua County library and their amazing Friends of the Library sales.) I really lost myself in this book and it gave my bad brain such a distinctive restful break. I’m perfectly okay with freezing that experience in time.

Sneezy: Oh dang, this is such a good question.

Sarah: Amanda, yes – exactly that. I was miserable and stressed and lonely and that book turned all that off for a while.

Sneezy: It’s not until I was thinking about this question that I realized I don’t want to reread Pride and Prejudice. The first time I read the book, it was a translated version edited for children. I did try when my English got better. I was excited to read a famous author in her native language, especially a book I had such fond memories of, but was never able to read more than a few pages. I felt guilty about it for a while, because it felt like a book I was ‘supposed’ to read and one I know I like. Reading what Jen, Sarah, and Amanda wrote made me realize it wasn’t a matter of want, but can’t. Of all the books I read before my family moved to Canada, somehow that book belongs specifically to Smol Sneezy, the one who’s yet to be hyphenated. It got ambered in dimming afternoons and extra thick white toast slathered with peanut butter and my mom’s favourite violin album, well beyond my reach.

The Mermaids Singing
A | BN | K | AB
It’s a little strange to realize this. It’s not a feeling of nostalgia in the sense that I yearn to return to that time, just a deep sensory memory that cannot be intruded on even if I wanted to. The book feels like an embodiment of paths forever closed, or perhaps more accurately, sacrificed to forge vastly different ones. I have great appreciation for what I have now, but it is a loss all the same.

Sarah: You were a different person when you read it, and you can’t go back?

As in, you and the circumstances around you were different and that can’t be replicated?

Lara: Such a great question! I went through a horrific breakup in 2011 and had temporary insomnia. By chance, a friend recommended the Carol Jordan and Tony Hill series by Val McDermid. I was wrapped up in it. Obsessive. It was precisely what my broken heart needed. I haven’t been tempted to revisit these books because they so perfectly met my needs in that moment.

Tara: I used to reread Jane Eyre at least once a year when I was in high school and university. I have a notoriously bad memory, but I remember the day my grade 9 English teacher handed it to me in the library because she thought I’d love it and she was right! Now, I can’t go back because I think Jane could have done so much better than Mr. Rochester. It’s better to have positive memories of it as a comfort reread than to bring my current lens and get mad about it.

What about you? Do you have special books that you can’t bring yourself to reread?

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links!

If you missed it, we posted the 2025 Summer Romance Bingo card. Bingo officially starts next Friday, June 20th. I know some readers have already started planning out their square selections.

Besides that, how are we all doing? It’s a tough time right now, if you’re in the U.S. I’m here to participate in the collective commiseration.

If you’re in the New England area, I’ll be in conversation with Katie Sturino, founder of Megababe, to discuss her debut novel. The event is hosted at Lovestruck Books and, if you haven’t been yet, it’s a great space.

Did you know author Mary Robinette Kowal has an Instagram account for her calico cat, Elsie? She’s taught Elsie to use those talking word association buttons and yes, I’m now considering how I can do that with my cats.

Lara: If you are fascinated by the medieval period and have some spare time, I heartily recommend this site.

If you plan on taking your books to the beach this summer, the Columbus Library may have a solution to keep your library books nice and dry.

The Spellshop

The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst is $1.99! This came out last summer and I’ve heard it’s lovely, but may fall into the category of “no plot, just vibes.” Have you read this one?

Join Kiela the librarian and her assistant, Caz the sentient spider plant, as they navigate the low stakes market of illegal spellmaking and the high risk business of starting over.

Kiela has always had trouble dealing with people. Thankfully, as librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, she hasn’t had to.

She and her assistant, Caz, a magically sentient spider plant, have spent the last eleven years sequestered among the empire’s most precious spellbooks, preserving their magic for the city’s elite. But when a revolution begins and the library goes up in flames, she and Caz save as many books as they can carry and flee to a faraway island Kiela was sure she’d never return to: her childhood home. Kiela hopes to lay low in the overgrown and rundown cottage her late parents left her and figure out a way to survive without drawing the attention of either the empire or the revolutionaries. Much to her dismay, in addition to a nosy—and very handsome—neighbor, she finds the town neglected and in a state of disrepair.

The empire, for all its magic and power, has been neglecting for years the people who depend on magical intervention to maintain healthy livestock and crops. Not only that, but the very magic that should be helping them has been creating destructive storms that have taken a toll on the island. Due to her past role at the library, Kiela feels partially responsible for this, and now she’s determined to find a way to make things right: by opening the island’s first-ever secret spellshop.

Her plan comes with risks—the consequence of sharing magic with commoners is death. And as Kiela comes to make a place for herself among the kind and quirky townspeople of her former home, she realizes that in order to make a life for herself, she must learn to break down the walls she has built up so high.

Well Matched

Well Matched by Jen DeLuca is $2.99! This is DeLuca’s latest release in her contemporary ren faire romances. I believe there’s another on the way? The series has been reviewed well here and seems great for some low angsty reads, but correct me if I’m wrong.

An accidentally in-love rom-com filled with Renaissance Faire flower crowns, kilts, corsets, and sword fights.

Single mother April Parker has lived in Willow Creek for twelve years with a wall around her heart. On the verge of being an empty nester, she’s decided to move on from her quaint little town, and asks her friend Mitch for his help with some home improvement projects to get her house ready to sell.

Mitch Malone is known for being the life of every party, but mostly for the attire he wears to the local Renaissance Faire–a kilt (and not much else) that shows off his muscled form to perfection. While he agrees to help April, he needs a favor too: she’ll pretend to be his girlfriend at an upcoming family dinner, so that he can avoid the lectures about settling down and having a more “serious” career than high school coach and gym teacher. April reluctantly agrees, but when dinner turns into a weekend trip, it becomes hard to tell what’s real and what’s been just for show. But when the weekend ends, so must their fake relationship.

As summer begins, Faire returns to Willow Creek, and April volunteers for the first time. When Mitch’s family shows up unexpectedly, April pretends to be Mitch’s girlfriend again…something that doesn’t feel so fake anymore. Despite their obvious connection, April insists they’ve just been putting on an act. But when there’s the chance for something real, she has to decide whether to change her plans–and open her heart–for the kilt-wearing hunk who might just be the love of her life.

Opening Up

RECOMMENDEDOpening Up by Lauren Dane is $1.99! This is the first book in the Ink & Chrome erotic contemporary series and is a KDD. Book two is also part of today’s deals. Elyse gave the book an A-:

This book was incredibly sexy and often very funny. It made me duck out on the coworker I was traveling with: “I’d love to go to TGI Fridays with you, but PJ and Asa have a new leather cane they’ve been dying to try out and also I need to know how his weenus piercing feels without a condom, so I’m gonna just head up to my room, ‘kay, thanks.”

The men of the Twisted Steel custom motorcycle shop are great with their hands… and they’re not afraid to get dirty.

PJ is exactly the kind of woman Twisted Steel owner Asa Barrons doesn’t need. The last thing he wants to do is mix business with pleasure, and PJ has some of the best custom detailing he’s ever seen. But the chemistry between them won’t be denied, and soon he’s introducing her to a whole new world in the bedroom, pushing her far beyond anything she’s ever experienced. PJ finds she can’t get enough, but how far is too far before he consumes her completely?

Unexpected Goals

Unexpected Goals by Kelly Farmer is 99c! This is a f/f hockey romance and it’s book two in the Out on the Ice series.

On-ice rivals find some surprising heat under all their hostility in this enemies-to-lovers hockey romance

If you can’t play nice, play hockey

Canadian goalie Maisy Goode is wary of American Jen Donato and her dirty playing. She’s been on the receiving end of Jen’s aggressive style and doesn’t like it one bit. Now that they’re on the same women’s pro team, keeping her eyes off Jen is a struggle.

Jen signed up to win it all with the Boston Ice. Her very public clashes with their hot goalie aren’t going to derail her championship plans. Jen’s a professional. But there’s just something about Maisy that gets under her skin.

The media loves the tension, but the more time Maisy and Jen are forced to spend together, the more they discover what’s between them isn’t entirely hostile.

At all.

Banter turns into flirting, and flirting turns into more. The closer they get to the playoffs, the more pressure weighs on the team—and the couple. Maisy needs Jen’s support. Jen needs to know Maisy’s all in. And it all needs to get sorted out before the season—and their relationship—closes out.

Chris M. Hill, who is a member of the podcast Patreon, designed this banner because the Pride rally and the No Kings rally are at the same day: “I made myself a new sign as a treat.”

When we saw it, we collectively lost our shit, and asked if we could spread the word about it.

LOOK AT THIS.

A sign that reads NO KINGS with a NO symbol as the O against a red backgroundBelow against a black background is YAS QUEENS in rainbow stripes, with a crown rendered in trans pride tilted over the Q. Design by CrisRomantasy

There is a free printable PDF or PNG at their KoFi, along with a pre-order for stickers and tshirts, which will ship later in June.

More than 1800 NO KINGS rallies are planned for this Saturday, June 14, as counter programming to the most embarrassing example of fascist onanism ever.

And, since June is Pride month, there are a lot of Pride activities going on that date, too. Perhaps yours also overlap, and this sign will work for you, too!

Thanks to Chris for permission to share – this design is so great, I had to share it.

Stay safe out there, and wherever you are, please know that you are loved exactly as you are. Whether you can live your life openly or keep parts of yourself hidden, you’re seen and welcomed and loved.

The Menopause Manifesto

RECOMMENDEDThe Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Jen Gunter is $3.99! Tara gave it an A:

If your field of fucks is completely barren and you just want some straightforward, evidence-based information served with a healthy dose of snark and the occasional jab at pseudoscience and Gwyneth Paltrow, this will be the book for you.

The internationally renowned, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Vagina Bible , Dr. Jen Gunter has been called the world’s most famous–and outspoken–gynecologist (The Guardian), the internet’s OB/GYN, and one of the fiercest advocates for women’s health. Now, in The Menopause Manifesto, Dr. Jen Gunter brings you empowerment through knowledge by countering stubborn myths and misunderstandings about menopause with hard facts, real science, fascinating historical perspective, and expert advice.

The only thing predictable about menopause is its unpredictability. Factor in widespread misinformation, a lack of research, and the culture of shame around women’s bodies, and it’s no wonder women are unsure what to expect during the menopause transition and beyond.

Menopause is not a disease–it’s a planned change, like puberty. And just like puberty, we should be educated on what’s to come years in advance, rather than the current practice of leaving people on their own with bothersome symptoms and too much conflicting information. Knowing what is happening, why, and what to do about it is both empowering and reassuring.

Frank and funny, Dr. Jen debunks misogynistic attitudes and challenges the
over-mystification of menopause to reveal everything you really need to know about:

 Perimenopause
 Hot flashes
 Sleep disruption
 Sex and libido
 Depression and mood changes
 Skin and hair issues
 Outdated therapies
 Breast health
 Weight and muscle mass
 Health maintenance screening
 And much more!

Filled with practical, reassuring information, this essential guide will revolutionize how women experience menopause–including how their lives can be even better for it!

A Trinket for the Taking

A Trinket for the Taking by Victoria Laurie is $3.99! Lara reviewed this and gave it a C+:

Looking at it with a bit of distance, this book is distinctly middle of the road for me. While I had a mostly good time reading it and I’m certainly curious about the next installment, it didn’t set my world on fire.

This mesmerizing mystery series debut from New York Times bestselling author Victoria Laurie introduces the captivating Dovey Van Dalen, once the belle of 1840s Copenhagen, now charged with recovering magic property from mortals—whatever it takes.

Dovey Van Dalen has a gorgeous day planned for her 200th driving her new Porsche, admiring the cherry blossoms abloom in her adopted city of Washington DC, and a little pampering. But her boss has other ideas. A powerful artifact has been stolen, and he fears it’s causing chaos in the unmagical world . . .

The rich and connected Ariti family has suffered a string of suspicious deaths, with no signs of foul play. Yet each member has died in the way they feared most. As the enchanting agent most skilled at blending in with mere mortals, Dovey must find answers and retrieve the dangerous trinket.

There’s just one unexpected by the time Dovey arrives at the art gallery where the Ariti patriarch died, FBI agent Grant “Gibs” Bartholomew has taken control of the scene. Dovey needs his cooperation to investigate—but she’ll have to hide her abilities, and her true objective, from a man who uncovers deceptions every day. And as they inch nearer a deadly truth, both will face danger even the spellbound would be lucky to survive . . .

Witches Get Stuff Done

Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper is $1.99! This is a small town paranormal romance between a witch and a librarian. Sounds a little too twee for me, but it could be right up your alley.

Juggling newfound witchy powers, a house full of ghosts, and verbal battles with the handsome local librarian is almost too much for a new witch to manage. A new witch with a coven, however, can get so much more done…

From the moment Riley Everett set foot in Starfall Point, magic bubbled inside of her. But with only her late aunt’s journals and a cantankerous live-in ghost butler to instruct her on all things witchy—including her newly inherited Victorian haunted house—Riley seeks out a coven for sisterhood and support. The last person she expects to be drawn to is the town’s frustrating, yet ridiculously attractive head librarian.

Edison Held knows almost everything there is to know about Starfall Point, but Shaddow House was always off-limits, thanks to its elusive owner. If he can convince the new owner, Riley, to let him take a peek inside, there’s so much he could learn. But as he gets closer to Riley, he’s fascinated by her dazzling wit and fiery spirit. Edison will do whatever he can to help Riley keep her family legacy alive, especially if it means spending more time with the captivating new witch in town.

Bestselling author Molly Harper wields a magical pen in this hilarious, delightful witchy romcom perfect for readers of The Ex Hex and Payback’s a Witch.

This HaBO is from A Very Desperate Reader, who really wants to locate this romance:

I got this book from my mom in 2016 or maybe 2017. She has had a collection of romance/erotica books since the 90s. I’m assuming the book was published around that same time: 90s to 2010s. The book cover was slightly ripped, but I’m pretty sure it had a girl with long blonde hair, and I think a long blue dress. She was in a running stance, looking over her shoulder. If you can just find me the title of the book or even just the author I would be greatly appreciative!

The description of the book:

A blonde (possibly platinum) haired girl goes to a party in the woods. There is a bonfire happening and she goes near a tree when a man that (she knows?) comes up to her and tries to assault her. Blonde girl panics and freezes him with ice (I want to say he froze all the way and then dropped to the floor making him shatter into pieces) and then she runs back to her home where she and her step-father live.

We switch point of views to the prince (I believe). He’s the bastard son of the king (I think or the king has a bastard son; it’s either one) and the king is sick and tells his son that he needs to marry. The prince not wanting to marry, doesn’t argue but decides that he’s going to join the soldiers who are going to collect different women for him to marry. He does this because he wants to see how his future wife acts without being around someone to impress.

We switch point of views again to a witch. She’s just kinda there. I think she’s trying to curse someone (I want to say the king but I don’t know) and she has this wizard that has the same powers as the blonde girl. (I think they are related but I never finished the book to prove my theory). Their point of views have a point, I just don’t know what it is, but it was often and I would usually skip them. The wizard and the witch were sleeping together. The wizard was more interested in the witch in the relationship.

We switch point of views again back to the storyline of the blonde girl and the prince. The prince and her start talking and start to fall in love. Blonde girl still thinks that he’s a solider and no one really important. She’s not really interested in marrying the prince. (During this point, I think the prince is sabotaging the other princess candidates because he loves the blonde girl. The prince and the blonde girl get married at some point and they consummate their marriage in this B&B of sorts or tavern. They continue on their journey to the palace. Once they get to the palace, the prince reveals himself as the prince and the blonde girl is pissed that he hid it from her and tries to leave. He doesn’t like that, so he puts her in the highest tower in the palace and basically keeps her prisoner. Eventually her powers start getting more powerful or she starts losing control and the prince finds out about them. She thinks this means that he will let her go and instead he wants to keep her even more.

The heroine had a pretty name and her mom either passed or just isn’t in the picture. She lives with her stepfather who treats her well and treated her mother well.

The hero potentially had dark hair and features. He doesn’t like his father much. And his father has a lot of women that he sleeps with. First scene of both of them i think is in the throne room.

The witch lives in a shack of some sort has some grand plan.

The wizard I think is a similar situation and is described as skinny.

I don’t remember any of their names sadly.

I’m sorry for this very long and seemingly hectic HaBO. I’ve been looking for this book for nearly 10 years and I need to just find this book. I’ve tried everything.

With this level of description, I know we can identity this one.

Happy Tuesday!

I swear, this month has so many good releases. One a personal note, too bad June is my busiest month so far.

We have a few releases with historical settings, a fantasy romance, and plenty of contemporaries.

What new releases are you excited for this week? Let us know in the comments!

A Rare Find

A Rare Find by Joanna Lowell

Author: Joanna Lowell
Released: June 10, 2025 by Berkley
Genre: , ,

When an aspiring archaeologist teams up with her childhood enemy for a treasure hunt, they find it impossible to bury their growing feelings, in a charming queer historical romance from the author of A Shore Thing.

Elfreda Marsden has finally made a major discovery—an ancient amulet proving the Viking army camped on her family’s estate. Too bad her nemesis is back from London, freshly exiled after a scandal and ready to wreak havoc on her life. Georgie Redmayne is everything Elfreda isn’t–charming, popular, carefree, distractingly attractive, and bored to death by the countryside. When the two collide (literally), the amulet is lost, and with it, Elfreda’s big chance to lead a proper excavation. Now Elfreda needs new evidence of medieval activity, and Georgie needs money to escape the doldrums of Derbyshire. Joining forces to locate a hidden hoard of Viking gold is the best chance for them both.

Marsdens and Redmaynes don’t get along, and that’s the least of the reasons these enemies can’t dream of something more. But as the quest takes them on unexpected adventures, sparks of attraction ignite a feeling increasingly difficult to identify as hatred. It’s far too risky to explore. And far too tempting to resist. Elfreda and Georgie soon find that the real treasure comes with a steep price… and the promise of a happiness beyond all measure.

Tara: Enemies to lovers! Viking artifacts! This one sounds super fun.

Never Been Shipped

Never Been Shipped by Alicia Thomspon

Author: Alicia Thomspon
Released: June 10, 2025 by Berkley
Genre: ,

A band reunion may be enough to change two musicians’ tune on love in this electric romance from USA Today bestselling author Alicia Thompson.

Micah’s relationship to music is complicated. As teenagers, her band took off after being featured on a popular TV show, but the group barely released their sophomore album before breaking up. Now, over a decade later, the band is reuniting for one more performance on a themed cruise, and Micah is determined to learn from her past mistakes — no losing herself in the music, and no losing her heart along the way.

John misses playing in a band, and mostly he misses Micah, who’d been his best friend until the music stopped. Back then, he didn’t take the lead, either in his guitar parts or while he sat back and watched her date another bandmate. John’s never been one to rock the boat, but he’s faced with another chance now that this cruise has brought music — and Micah — back in his life.

Onboard, Micah can’t help but see John with brand new eyes, and John’s feelings only intensify as the discordant band’s tension grows to a breaking point. With five days at sea, there’s a ticking clock on anything that might develop between them, and they’ll have to decide if their relationship is destined to be more than a one-hit wonder.

Dahlia: I see Alicia Thompson, I preorder it. She is the literal top of my autobuy list. And this one is reported to have cameos from my all time fave, Cold World.

The Palace of Illusions

The Palace of Illusions by Rowenna Miller

Author: Rowenna Miller
Released: June 10, 2025 by Redhook
Genre: ,

The Palace of Illusions brings readers to a Paris breathless with excitement at the dawn of the twentieth century, where for a select few there is a second, secret Paris where the magic of the City of Light is very real in this enchanting and atmospheric fantasy from the author of The Fairy Bargains of Prospect Hill.

In the run up to the 1900s World’s Fair Paris is abuzz with creative energy and innovation. Audiences are spellbound by the Lumiere brothers’ moving pictures and Loie Fuller’s serpentine dance fusing art and technology. But for Clara Ironwood, a talented and pragmatic clockworker, nothing compares to the magic of her godfather’s mechanical creations, and she’d rather spend her days working on the Palace of Illusions, an intricate hall of mirrors that is one of the centerpieces of the world’s fair.

When her godfather sends Clara a hideous nutcracker for Christmas, she is puzzled until she finds a hidden compartment that unlocks a mirror-world Paris where the Seine is musical, fountains spout lemonade, and mechanical ballerinas move with human grace. The magic of her godfather’s toys was real.

As Clara explores this other Paris and begins to imbue her own creations with its magic, she soon discovers a darker side to innovation. Suspicious men begin to approach her outside of work, and she could swear a shadow is following her. There’s no ignoring the danger she’s in, but Clara doesn’t know who to trust. The magic of the two Parises are colliding and Clara must find the strength within herself to save them both.

Amanda: Magic and the World’s Fair in Paris sounds like an amazing combo.

Series: Thieves of Dragemor #1

Two thieves vie for dominance in the illegal dragon egg trade, putting both their lives and their hearts on the line in this scorching romantasy from New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle.

For Brynla Aihr, crime and survival have always gone hand in hand. Ever since she escaped the fanatical dragon-worshipping cult that controls her homeland, she’s had to carve out a life doing the stealing dragon eggs. Egg theft is illegal and, in most cases, fatal. To breach a dragon’s nest means a harrowing journey through the ancient wards spelled to keep the monstrous beasts confined. Dragons can’t get out and only those with a death wish can get in.

Despite the risks, dragon eggs are highly coveted for their magic. An illegal trade flourishes under competing criminal empires, and Brynla’s loyalty has always been to the highest bidder. Until she finds herself kidnapped and blackmailed by Lord Andor, a formidable lieutenant of House Kolbeck, and thrust into the dangerous political games of rivaling dynasties.

Brynla and Andor clash at every turn, sparking heat in ways Brynla’s never felt before. But in a world that’s prophesized to return to the dragons, and rife with betrayal and secrets at every turn…how close to the flames is she willing to stand?

Amanda: I think this is the first fantasy romance in a while that made me really perk up.

Roommating

Roommating by Meredith Schorr

Author: Meredith Schorr
Released: June 10, 2025 by Forever
Genre: ,

Sizzling chemistry and tender friendship develops between two accidental roommates in this hilarious rom-com from the author of As Seen on TV.

Sabrina is too busy with grad school and her job as a library page to think about dating. Until her elderly roommate Marcia invites her estranged grandson Adam to move into their two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan temporarily to “find himself.” Sabrina doesn’t mind sharing the small space with Adam if it helps Marcia repair her relationship with her grandson. But she’s not expecting to fall for him herself. Adam is not only gorgeous, he’s kind, funny, shares her love of reading, and clearly adores Marcia. After one too many accidental midnight rendezvous in the bathroom (him shirtless), the tension between them is hotter than ever. But they’re not the only ones feeling the heat. After Marcia has a health scare, her doctors advise that one of her younger roommates must go.

In a comical and sexy battle to prove who deserves to stay, the two pull out all the stops. All’s fair in love and real estate, but in the end victory is not so sweet when winning the apartment could mean losing each other.

Dahlia: This has the sweetest premise, and I keep getting drawn in by that cover. Books and a dog! What could be better?

Slow Burn Summer

Slow Burn Summer by Josie Silver

Author: Josie Silver
Released: June 10, 2025 by Dell
Genre: ,

A talent agent hires an actress to play the part of “novelist” on a book tour for his agency’s publicity-shy client

She’s playing the part of romance author, but has she found her own real life love story?

Talent agent Charlie Francisco has three problems: a divorce that ended his screenwriting career, a business he never planned to inherit, and a take-your-breath-away romance novel whose author wants nothing to do with its publication. The book is a surefire hit, if only his agency can find someone to “play” author on its summer book tour.

Enter Kate Elliott, a former soap actress who’s miraculously right for the part at the very moment her life seems to be going all wrong. Kate is still recovering from her own divorce and Charlie’s job offer is a lifeline. She agrees to the pretense for all interviews, signings, and appearances surrounding the novel’s publication. But she can’t know who really wrote the remarkable story—the one so beautiful it’s made her believe in love again.

When Kate and Charlie meet they’re all friction and sparks—the one thing they have in common is they’re determined to play their respective parts. But as the summer heat ups and the lies get bigger and bigger, can they stick to their lines . . . or will they go off-script?

Lara: I absolutely love this premise!

Do Me a Favor

Do Me a Favor by Cathy Yardley is $2.49 at Amazon! This is a standalone romance with an older couple. The heroine is a widowed cookbook writer and the hero is a divorced handyman.

Willa Lieu-Endicott moved from California to the Pacific Northwest to start over. Since her husband’s death, she’s been struggling to get back her old career as a cookbook ghostwriter. Unfortunately, her latest project—ghostwriting for a viral cooking sensation known more for his washboard abs than his meals—has her stuck.

Until she meets her new neighbor.

Hudson Daws, the handyman next door, lives on a farm with his parents and two adult children. He’s the opposite of everything she’s ever known. His happily chaotic life includes biker barbecues, an escape artist dog, and adorably menacing goats. He’s also got a sinfully sexy smile and a rumbling bass voice that makes her shiver. He inspires her.

From their first meeting, the two fall into an escalating cycle of favors, paybacks…and attraction, even though Willa’s trying to keep her distance.

They both have their own pasts to deal with. Now, they just have to figure out if they have a future.

A delectable rom-com about a widowed cookbook writer and a divorced handyman who find that it’s never too late for a fresh start.

Empire of Sand

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri is $1.99! This is an adult fantasy novel with some romantic elements. Though this is marketed as adult fantasy, some readers it felt like it was more YA. Empire of Sand has been on my TBR pile for a while; have you read this one? Aarya highly recommends it.

A nobleman’s daughter with magic in her blood. An empire built on the dreams of enslaved gods. Empire of Sand is Tasha Suri’s captivating, Mughal India-inspired debut fantasy.

The Amrithi are outcasts; nomads descended of desert spirits, they are coveted and persecuted throughout the Empire for the power in their blood. Mehr is the illegitimate daughter of an imperial governor and an exiled Amrithi mother she can barely remember, but whose face and magic she has inherited.

When Mehr’s power comes to the attention of the Emperor’s most feared mystics, she must use every ounce of will, subtlety, and power she possesses to resist their cruel agenda.

Should she fail, the gods themselves may awaken seeking vengeance…

Empire of Sand is a lush, dazzling fantasy novel perfect for readers of City of Brass and The Wrath & the Dawn.

Late Bloomer

Late Bloomer by Mazey Eddings is $3.99! I believe Dahlia mentioned this on her month Queer Romance Roundup and I find the cover to be super cute. It’s a standalone f/f romance.

Winning the lottery has ruined Opal Devlin’s life. After quitting her dead-end job where she’d earned minimum wage and even less respect, she’s bombarded by people knocking at her door for a handout the second they found out her bank account was overflowing with cash. And Opal can’t seem to stop saying yes.

With her tender heart thoroughly abused, Opal decides to protect herself by any means necessary, which to her translates to putting almost all her new money to buying a failing flower farm in Asheville, North Carolina to let the flowers live out their plant destiny while she uses the cabin on the property to start her painting business.

But her plans for isolation and self-preservation go hopelessly awry when an angry (albeit gorgeous) Pepper Boden is waiting for her at her new farm. Pepper states she’s the rightful owner of Thistle and Bloom Farms, and isn’t moving out. The unlikely pair strike up an agreement of co-habitation, and butt heads at every turn. Can these opposites both live out their dreams and plant roots? Or will their combustible arguing (and growing attraction) burn the whole place down?

Princess and the Player

Princess and the Player by Ilsa Madden-Mills is $1.99 on Amazon! It’s also in KU if you subscribe to the service. The heroine is a “penniless princess” and the hero is a party boy NFL player. A surprise pregnancy is involved.

A masquerade ball brings together an NFL player and a penniless princess in this smart and sexy romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills.

Level-headed Francesca Lane never thought she’d miss her own wedding. But when her fiancé betrays her, she puts on her wedding dress and ditches the altar for a masquerade ball—at a sex club.

There, she meets NFL star Tuck Avery, dressed as a prince and hiding behind a mask as he celebrates his birthday. For one night, Francesca and Tuck indulge in a wickedly incognito affair. No names. No strings. And the masks don’t come off.

Unfortunately, Francesca soon realizes her prince is the wealthy jock who lives in the penthouse of her apartment building. His hobbies include parties and supermodels—or so the tabloids say. Another shallow jerk is the last thing Francesca needs, so she vows to keep Tuck from recognizing her, not that she’s his type anyway.

But fate has a teeny-tiny trick up her sleeve… a plus sign on a pregnancy test. Can this tormented prince accept love, or will he push his princess away forever?

Princess and the Player is a complete stand-alone romance with nuanced characters and a swoony happily ever after.

Cover Snark: An Us Anus

Welcome back to Cover Snark!

The Firebrand by T.M. Smith. A very tan and veiny torso with tattoos on the shoulders and biceps. His hands disappear toward his crotch where a lot of red smoke is obscuring the bottom of the cover.

From Pam G: Just the ticket for a cold winter night.

Sarah: HE NEEDS TO SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

That much red should not be coming out of any region of the body, let alone THAT ONE.

Lara: He’s really squeezing the wiener…

The Dragon Prince's Magic by Elva Birch. A shirtless man with floppy blond hair. Green whisps of smoke swirl around him.

From MegCat: That glowing green smoke suggests that something smells really bad, which explains his irritated expression. That torso also looks a bit off at first glance (but it’s better zoomed up close).

Sarah: First, I misread the author name as Ima Bitch, which, fine, own your strengths. But, uh, did the dragon prince fart? IS HIS MAGIC THE FART?

Also, why is the drawstring on his sweatpants so distracting?

Lara: Dragon farts!

The Lonely Mortician by D.M. Tregaskis. A white table linen with hobby berries, sticks of cinnamon, and a corked apothecary bottle. The label says formaldehyde, but the liquid is red and dripping down the rim and onto the cloth. The blood drops are clearly photoshopped as they're a different color than the bottle.

Elyse: There’s someone for everybody I guess?

Sarah: I haven’t celebrated Christmas in a long ass time, but is blood a new decorating motif? I mean, Nothing says spooky and sweet like ample blood spatter patterns.

Lara: Is cinnamon a Christmas thing? An embalming thing? Both???

Always Be An Us by Summer Hunter. A man dressed in black and wearing sunglasses is sitting in a large armchair in a room. The room has two large windows with gauzy curtains being blown inward. Everyone is filtered in shades of purple. The title is situated over parts of the lit windows, which makes the kerning between "an" and "us" look very small.

From J: This cover was redesigned. Can you believe it?!

Maya: That cannot be real. How? Also, who’s?

Sarah: If you can be anything in the world…

Lara: There is only one way to read that title. Just the one.

Welcome back, everyone!

It’s Pride Month and I have two recommendations that you might want to put on your radar, especially if you’re doing any kind of reading challenge for the month.

I also have some non-fiction about a musical era very near and dear to my hear, and some fantasy.

Any recommendations you’d like to pass along? Leave ’em in the comments!

Be Gay, Do Crime

Happy Pride Month! This is an anthology from some prominent writers and, as the title suggests, its about queer people dabbling in some crime and chaos.

A follow-up to their runaway success Peach Sixteen Stories of Unsavory Women, editors Molly Llewellyn and Kristel Buckley return with Be Gay, Do Crime, a celebration of queer chaos from an all-queer author lineup featuring Myriam Gurba, Emily Austin, Alissa Nutting, and Francesca Ekwuyasi

A trans woman makes increasingly frequent hoax calls to a business where she’s had a negative experience, watching the consequences with perverse joy. A group of aging queers turns to bank robbery to stop the sale of their bungalow complex to a development company. As the president prepares to give a speech, two women lurk among the journalists, ready to shoot him. And an aspiring author takes to stealing items from strangers’ homes in a kind of cosmic redistribution each time one of her relationships fail.

In sixteen brilliant, wild-eyed stories, Be Gay, Do Crime delivers a celebration and reckoning of why queer people turn to crime–unintentionally, as a means of survival, as protest, as rescue, or to right injustices big and small.

Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil

Kelly Faircloth posted about this on Instagram and noted that it’s quite hilarious. It seems pretty quirky and has it looks like the kind of wry fantasy I’d like.

A hilarious and surprisingly moving cozy fantasy novel from the best-selling author of Once Upon a Tome.

In a tiny farm on the edge of the miserable village of East Grasby, Isabella Nagg is trying to get on with her tiny, miserable existence. Dividing her time between tolerating her feckless husband, caring for the farm’s strange animals, cooking up “scrunge,” and crooning over her treasured pot of basil, Isabella can’t help but think that there might be something more to life. When Mr. Nagg returns home with a spell book purloined from the local wizard, she thinks: what harm could a little magic do?

This debut novel by beloved rare bookseller and memoirist Oliver Darkshire reimagines a heroine of Boccaccio’s Decameron in a delightfully deranged world of talking plants, walking corpses, sentient animals, and shape-shifting sorcerers. As Isabella and her grouchy, cat-like companion set off to save the village from an entrepreneurial villain running a goblin-fruit Ponzi scheme, Darkshire’s tale revels in the ancient books and arcane folklore of a new and original kind of enchantment.

A delightful and entertaining story of self-discovery—as well as fungus, capitalism, and sorcery—Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil is a story for those who can’t help but find magic even in the oddest and most baffling circumstances.

Trans History: A Graphic Novel

Our second of two Pride book recommendations! I think graphic novels are a great way to communicate denser topics (like history!) to younger audiences.

An essential introduction to trans history, from ancient times to the present day, in full-color graphic nonfiction format. Deeply researched, highly readable, and featuring a broad range of voices.

What does “trans” mean, and what does it mean to be trans? Diversity in human sex and gender is not a modern phenomenon, as readers will discover through illustrated stories and records that introduce historical figures ranging from the controversial Roman emperor Elagabalus to the swashbuckling seventeenth-century conquistador Antonio de Erauso to veterans of the Stonewall uprising Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. In addition to these individual profiles, the book explores some of the societal roles played by trans people beginning in ancient times and shows how European ideas about gender were spread across the globe. It explains how the science of sexology and the growing acceptance of (and backlash to) gender nonconformity have helped to shape what it means to be trans today. Illustrated conversations with modern activists, scholars, and creatives highlight the breadth of current trans experiences and give readers a deeper sense of the diversity of trans people, a group numbering in the millions. Extensive source notes provide further resources. Moving, funny, heartbreaking, and empowering, this remarkable compendium from trans creators Alex L. Combs and Andrew Eakett is packed with research on every dynamic page.

Where Are Your Boys Tonight?

This was a recommendation from a coworker who came up to me this week and asked, “Random question, but were you an emo kid in high school?” She clocked me.

An energetic and explosive oral history examining the mainstream emo explosion from 1999-2008 and how it reversed expectations of what was possible in popular music, featuring exclusive interviews with the bands, managers, journalists, photographers, and awe-struck fans that defined the genre and a “scene” that would one day sweep across the entire country.

If Meet Me in the Bathroom traced New York City’s underground Indie scene, Where Are Your Boys Tonight? draws a wide circle around an emo culture that would grace the stages of the mainstream and become bigger than anyone ever thought possible. There was Pete Wentz, the Fall Out Boy leader who launched a litany of scene-stealing bands and preposterous side hustles, and Gerard Way, the wizard behind My Chemical Romance and The Black Parade. Panic! at the Disco and Paramore exploded soon after–a pair of intrepid outsiders who got massive playing by rules uniquely their own. Told from within the scenes that created this big bang, Where Are Your Boys Tonight? follows first-hand accounts of New Jersey basement shows and Long Island VFW hall gigs, where bands like Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, Thursday, Lifetime, and Taking Back Sunday laid the foundation for the explosion of rock’s most polarizing (and addictive) sub-genre.

New Jersey native and former Billboard staff writer Chris Payne experienced much of emo’s mainstream moment from sweaty crowds and mosh pits, and in Where Are Your Boys Tonight?, he reexamines these bands as they come of age and sky-rocket to fame within a genre rife with contradictions: avowing punk ethos while walking the VMAs red carpet; creating outlets for mental health struggles while perhaps inadvertently turning them into a crucial part of belonging; building fandoms significantly comprising young women and LGBTQ+ kids in an environment that was often toxic and unsafe. Set at the unique intersection of regional emo scenes and the rise of worldwide social media communities like MySpace and Tumblr, Where Are Your Boys Tonight? is a deeply personal, uncompromisingly emotional, and occasionally absurd account–featuring interviews with musicians like Pete Wentz, Chris Carrabba, and Jim Adkins; journalists like Leslie Simon, Andy Greenwald, and Hanif Abdurraqib; and the managers, idolizing scenesters, and won-over fans that made this all possible.
