Well, that was an expensive lunch hour. I wandered out to my closest bookstore, looking for a copy of Paladin of Souls (which I still haven't found). One of the stores near the bookstore is a Danier Leather Outlet, so I brought along the leather jacket I'd bought there a year ago to get a button sewn back on.
Big mistake - walking into that store means I leave with something, every time. I'm now the owner of a tan suede blazer/fall jacket - or I will be in a week, once I get it back from having the sleeves shortened.
Sigh. I have no willpower. I can't really afford the jacket right now, but that doesn't stop me from buying it. I'm beginning to believe that credit cards are bad things.
On other topics,
Overall, I think the first Sorkin-less episode was pretty good.

The WTF?:
I think John Wells handled the first episode pretty well. I do hope that we get Zoey back, alive and well, but I'm not really all that hopeful.

The Good:
- John Goodman rocked. He was great, and very presidential. I could totally see the Republicans using this opportunity to get a Republican VP in place. If the Democrats are going to give them this kind of opening... That's not a snipe at Republicans, by the way - I would imagine the same thing would happen in the reverse situation.
- I loved seeing the Bartlett family, coming together in a time of crisis. It was great that Ellie was the one to offer comfort to her Dad after the blow-up in the kitchen
- CJ giving Danny the heads up to release his story. I'm sure she'll get in trouble for it eventually, but I loved that she did it. I hope we see lots of Danny this year.
- Danvers! I've only been watching Homicide for the last couple of months - one of the digital stations I receive is stripping it, so I'm partway through Season 3. I'm late on the Homicide bandwagon, but I'm always happy when I see someone from that show anywhere else.
- Toby's two speeches. Which one had he started already, I wonder? The pessimistic one (giving Andi's point a little more validity), or the optimistic one? Me, I bet it was the "She's alive and well" one.
The Ehh:
- I thought it was a little odd that Elizabeth was never referred to by name. If I hadn't read press releases about the casting of the role, I wouldn't know her name. I don't know her husband's or her kids' names. Usually, when new characters are introduced, they're, well, introduced.
- I'm really ambivalent about the heavy Josh/Donna in love vibes they're giving out. That's been building for a while, but looking at ER (where it seems like everyone ends up with a co-worker) I hope John Wells doesn't go that route. I've always liked the early vibe they had, more siblings than anything else.
- No snappy, fast-paced dialogue. Well, it wouldn't really have suited the mood of the episode, anyway.
- Wouldn't the Cabinet meeting where Jed had to get approval for invoking the 25th amendment been full of influential Democrats? Why would Leo have to re-justify the decision to the party?
- I wish we'd seen more on the search for Zoey.
The WTF?:
- Who did Stockard Channing piss off the hair department? I mean, I know she's supposed to be all distraught and everything, but she looked like she was wearing a really bad wig.
- Why would Abby have been involved in the decision to assassinate Omar Sharif? I didn't get why she was angry about not being part of the decision. She isn't in the Sit Room, she doesn't take part in those conversations. She's the First Lady, not the President - nobody elected her to make those decisions. Jed should have told her before she found out from CNN, sure, but I don't think she should have been involved in the initial decision. Or is my take on American politics wrong?

A suede blazer?

I finished Paladin, I finished Paladin
And it was great.
