For the first time ever, I went looking all over my car to find out if there was a block heater built-in that I could plug in. Unfortunately, there wasn't. Then I started my car for a bit, and the engine made sad, sad noises that I've never heard before.

I don't remember it ever being this cold.

I wonder if she'll start in the morning.

No, you don't.

Environment Canada's historical data (http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_e.html?Province=ALL&StationName=Ottawa&SearchType=BeginsWith&LocateBy=Province&Proximity=25&ProximityFrom=City&StationNumber=&IDType=MSC&CityName=&ParkName=&LatitudeDegrees=&LatitudeMinutes=&LongitudeDegrees=&LongitudeMinutes=&NormalsClass=A&SelNormals=&StnId=4337&) for Ottawa gives the lowest record temperature for Ottawa as -36.1 degrees, and that was in 1943.

You might have hit a windchill down to -40, according to the historical data, there's a day like that about 3 years in 4.

I was just going by what the sign on top of the TD branch at O'Connor and McLeod said. I got to work, opened my briefcase, and took out my calculator (this was when I was working for RADARSAT, so I was doing a lot of math), and the solar cell had cracked from the cold.

The sign may not have been all that accurate, or as you say, it may have been registering the wind chill.

Sounds bloody cold, yes. Could have been wind-chill. Or it could just have been the thermometer they were using was not properly built/calibrated for the really cold weather.
