I was out at a Raptors game last night, so I watched Smallville when I got home, and Angel this morning before I left for work. I enjoyed both shows immensely, although for different reasons.
Shattered was the right word for it, wasn't it? They really, really brought the hurt in this one. Completely believable, completely in character, and possibly the beginning of a rift that will make us ache for both Clark and Lex.
Michael Rosenbaum did an absolutely amazing job showing Lex losing control, little bit by little bit. And, you could see his sanity shatter, when he turned around at the end, and Clark wasn't there.
This episode was damn near perfect. Chloe was useful and Lana was barely there, both of which are unusual for the last two seasons, and very good.
I loved that Clark only had to look at his parents once before choosing to support Lex. He so wanted to believe that Lex wasn't going crazy, that there was something else going on. He was right, of course, but unfortunately he gave up a little too soon. I was ready to slap him for super-speeding away when the doctor pulled up, but I could certainly understand his motivation. He must have thought that one of his nightmares (from Slumber) was coming true. After all Lex did say, "you're not even human". Clark missing the nuances of tone - awe instead of anger - is completely understandable. Add to that the fact that Clark thought the doctor was okay - Chloe had, after all, verified that the drug she was trying to give Lex was a common sedative - and his leaving makes a kind of sense.
Poor, poor Lex. And Lionel is completely insane - it's a sociopath that can't empathize with other people at all, that has trouble seeing them as real, right? If so, that's what he is.
And the image of little Lex, in his school's bell tower, crooning lullabies to a rolled up blanket just breaks my heart. And makes me wonder what the fuck actually happened to Julian. Has Lionel done this memory wipe thing to Lex before? If so, was it because Lex had killed Julian, even by accident, or because Lex had seen either Lionel or Lily do it?
"Hurt" over the shot of Lex in the padded room just sent shivers down my spine.
Very well done.
I so need to make an icon with screencaps from the episode and the lyrics to "Hurt". I've never heard Johnny Cash's version before, and it was amazing.
As for Angel, the last 15 seconds of the episode made this episode for me. I admit, I was squeeing like the fan girl I am. I was actually yelling at the screen, "It's Lindsey! Oh my God, it's Lindsey!", over and over again. When Eve first walked in and started talking, I thought for sure that it was Lilah she was talking to, until she started to strip. Then when they panned down to her shoes and Eve taking them off the way Lilah always did, I thought her voice would change and we'd pan back up to Stephanie Romanov. But no, she just crawled into bed with a much-tattooed (wards, maybe?) Lindsey. My favourite secondary character (well, second-favorite, now - Lilah's moved into top spot) is back! Woo hoo! My Angel slash OTP (Angel/Lindsey) may get a little revival.
Ahem. Now that that's done, I've gotta say I'm glad I managed to stay unspoiled for this. I get such a rush from these little revelations :-)
Not much to say about the rest of the episode, actually. All thought was blown away by that last shot.
