I can't believe how tired I am. Three nights running with only cat-naps for sleep, and I can barely keep my eyes open today. Tonight's not likely to be any better.

Why am I so tired, you ask?

M's been at my place for the last few days. He's still sick (it's been almost two weeks) but he's now at the "no fever but must sleep 18 hours of every day" stage. He was supposed to head back to his place yesterday, but didn't feel up to the hour-long drive, which I could understand. Since he doesn't have a physio appointment, he probably won't head home today, either.

Unfortunately, while he may be sleeping an unbelievable number of hours each day, he's almost impossible to sleep next to. Both Saturday night & Sunday night, he actually spent most of the night on the sofa, recognizing that I was having trouble sleeping next to him, but that didn't help much - I kept waking up, feeling guilty for having the bed. I think maybe tonight, I'll try sleeping on the sofa.

Anyway, I'm off to Tim Horton's to try to inject some caffeine into my system. Maybe that will help.

Earplugs! I knew I forgot something when I stopped at the drug store.

Well, it's not so much snoring as a kind of apnia. Snoring's nice and regular, I can deal with that. Suffice it to say, there's lots of loud noises coming from his throat, with no kinda pattern. I'd start to drift off, and then be jerked awake again.

I guess I'll stop at the drug store again on the way home and get some earplugs. I'm not sure how well I'd sleep the night on the sofa. I've fallen asleep on it while watching TV often enough, but that will probably just lead to more cat naps, and no real sleep.

Oh, yeah. Definitely earplugs are the way to go. Good luck!!

Has Mike gotten any treatment for the apnia? If not, he probably feels all the time like you do right now, because he won't be getting a decent amount of REM sleep. Maybe he needs one of those Darth Vader masks?

Earplugs can do wonders. Get the soft, gently-tapered, round-tipped foam ones. (The complete cylinder foam ones are far less comfortable on the ears.)

The brand I prefer are AOSafety, available in 8-packs (4 pairs) from Canadian tire for a few bucks. (Generally noticeably cheaper than at a drug store.)

I use them for motorcycling, my partner uses them for sleeping all the time. (Not that I'm loud at night -- she uses them when sleeping alone, too. She's just very noise sensitive.)

Thanks for the advice. I didn't need the earplugs after last night, but I think I'll keep them around in case this happens again. It seems like the worst of his cold is over though (thank God!).

Well, the apnia (if that's what it was) is not a usual problem - he just had so much gunk in his throat and lungs that it sounded like his windpipe was getting blocked, and there'd be this huge explosion of sound as it cleared. It didn't interrupt his sleep, just mine.

He was much better last night, and I didn't even need the earplugs. It seems like the worst is over. Actually, he's probably on his way home now (or shortly), for his physio appointment at noon.
