Last night was the big night of premieres, with 4 shows I wanted to catch.

There were a number of things about this season premiere of Smallville that I liked, but topping the list, by far, is Erica Durance's Lois. She was snarky, she was smart, and she had great chemistry with Tom Welling. I can't wait to see what kind of sparks she strikes with Michael Rosenbaum.

Other good things were naked!Clark, shirtless!Lex (heh. yes, I am that shallow), Kal-el's flying, and Margot Kidder. Lines like Lois' "Give me a big geek in glasses anyday" just made me giggle.

At 9, I caught Veronica Mars. Wow. This is one critics favorite that I can totally get behind. Kirsten Bell was amazing. The scene where Veronica tells us about how she'd lost her virginity? Totally rocked. The whole girl detective-noir thing that was going on with the detective agency was really well done. I just hope the writers/producers already know who killed Lilly Kane, and the show doesn't end up in Twin-Peaks plotting hell.

Then, it was CSI:NY. I figured I'd give this a shot, but I wasn't overly impressed. I'll give it a few weeks, though, to see if the cast meshes a little. There was one really nice bit, though - the speech about how Taylor had kept the beach ball, because it held it's wife's breath. That was good.

The references to 9/11 seem...cheap to me, somehow. I'm not sure why - anyone working in New York that day in emergency services would have been effected, so it wasn't truly gratuitous. I think maybe it's a little too early for "strongly affected by 9/11" to have become the same sort of stock character that "disenfranchised Vietnam Vet" was 15 years ago.

Best show of the night? Veronica Mars, hands down. Hence, my new icon. *g* The pilot's being replayed on UPN Friday at 9, and Sunday at 10, if anyone wants to check it out.

Unfortunately, I missed Lost, which I've been looking forward to. I tried taping the West coast feed, but the Cable Box/VCR combo went glitchy. Urg. If I'd just waited the couple of minutes after the end of CSI:NY the make sure the VCR cut in, I woulda been okay. Oh well, I guess that's what BitTorrent is for.

CSI:NY

I'm sorry, I have no interest in watching movies like "the Bone Collector", which is what the CSI:NY story made me think of. I'll give them another week to tell me a story that I actually want to watch.

The cool-blue tinting is also very depressing. Sure, NYC isn't sunny Miami or glitzy Vegas, but ugh.

Gary Sinise did a decent, though not exceptional, job. I found Melina Kanakaredes very flat. Nice face, but I saw that already watching "Providence". The rest of the cast didn't have enough screen time to make an impression. (Side note: Does everyone else, including TV Guide, think Rory Cochrane made a dumb decision getting out of CSI:Miami?)

And I'm a little confused on the police work side of things. In CSI:Vegas, the team doesn't carry guns -=> lab jocks. The CSI:Miami team carries & uses -=> detectives/investigators. But CSI:NY team are labeled detectives, but walk into the suspect's apartment without guns drawn, and don't call for backup when things get spooky.

Also, the 10PM timeslot is much more difficult to enjoy at 6AM when the alarm goes off.

I'll try to remember to check out Veronica Mars.

Yeah, the cool-blue tinting and dim lighting didn't really work for me, either. It's like the production team noticed how heavily light is used in the other two CSIs (neon/fluorescents in one, sun in the other), and decided to make this one stand out by just not using any light. I really don't think New York is that dark and dank, is it? Cramped, sure - but they got something against light bulbs?

I'll try to remember to check out Veronica Mars.
Ooh, do. I think you'll like it.
