The new TV Season
Sep. 14th, 2004 09:35 amAs usual, I spend too much time watching TV.
Anyway, there were 4 premieres that I caught over the weekend.
I didn't even know that there was a new Batman cartoon coming on, so this was a surprise as I was flipping through the listings Saturday morning. It was kinda weird, having a Batman cartoon without Bruce Timm and Paul Dini working on it (they've done the last 3 Batman animated series, and well as Superman and Justice League). The animation was typical DC, but there were a few differences. No Jim Gordon, and a cop on the Gotham P.D. is one of Bruce's best friends. Hey, wait a minute - Bruce has friends, that's a pretty big change, right there. In other things, Alfred was deliciously snarky, the Joker was well done, and I can't wait until they get some of the other early villians in. I'm expecting Selina Kyle to show up soon. The whole "the batman: the early years" thing allows them to introduce the classic villians as somewhat new characters, which could be cool.
I just want to see if they bring in Robin, and which Robin it is if they do. Given the setup, one would think it would have to be Dick Grayson, instead of the mix of Jason and Tim used in the Toon!verse for the last decade or so, but it will still be cool to see.
Delta State was interesting. I got an email Sunday morning from a friend who'd caught the first episode Saturday night, noticed it was on again Sunday night, and thought I might like it. He was right *g*. The animation is cool - it looks kinda like the stuff used in the "Take on Me" video, but a little more substantial - it has colour, at least. The faces are a little more irregular than I'm used to seeing in animation, but the hair is great - it moves. The story involves 4 housemates, who seem to have super powers, and can move into a "Delta State" - dreaming, it seems - in order to do things. I wish I'd seen the actual pilot, cause I'm sure that would have been explained better. I haven't found it on BitTorrent yet, but hopefully it will show up.
Anyway, the four characters are all distinctly drawn, and interesting. It's on Teletoon here in Canada, part of their weekend adult zone stuff, and I'll be catching it again.
I'm not sure what I think about Jack & Bobby. The Mom was just a little too crazy, y'know? The whole scene with Jack (the older brother) telling his Mom to back off, and he was going to be raising Bobby from now on? Uh, no, that's not how it works. She's the adult. Yes, she needed to back off. Sure, Jack can offer advice. But he doesn't get to run the household now. That's just bullshit. I'm still trying to figure out why so many critics are calling this a well written show - the plot "twists" were telegraphed or incomprehensible (what was Jack doing in the principal's office?), and the characters never really engaged me.
I'll probably watch another week or two of it anyway, but this probably won't be on my "tape when I'm not around" list.
As season premieres go, the Everwood one was..okay. Amy didn't annoy me (Yay!), but there was nowhere near enough Bright (strip basketball!!?) or Delia (in a dress?! - I shared Ephram's shock) to keep me happy. I loved the interactions between Andy and Harold, though. And, I'm glad that the actress playing Rose has been bumped up into the credits. It's also good that Andy's starting to realize that he made a mistake with Madison. Sure, Ephram's his kid, but when your son's girlfriend is pregnant, you don't keep that knowledge from him!
I think that's it for this week in new shows - the next thing to look for is Gilmore Girls next Tuesday.

Date: 2004-09-14 08:04 am (UTC)I hadn't heard about either The Batman or Delta State either, so apparently the marketing hasn't been exactly...overwhelming. I mean, I'm currently reading about 10 different DC titles, most of them Bat-related, and I don't recall seeing an ad for the new Batman anywhere in there. It's only on the WB currently, as far as I can tell, though. Hopefully, YTV will pick it up.
