So, I bought an old computer (PII, 300 Mhz) for $25 a few weeks ago, intending to set it up as a file server. C's company was upgrading all the computers, and selling off all the old stuff for whatever they could get for them. Since C is the network guy, I trust him that the computer's in pretty good shape.
I've been avoiding setting up the network, though, 'cause it's a pain to take my current system apart. I'm not planning on having a keyboard and monitor attached to the server generally - I'll just use Remote Desktop if I need to do something, once the network is up - but I need a keyboard and monitor in order to install a new hard drive, and just get the network configured. Well, it occured to me last night that I probably had enough spare parts that I could get it together without having to use parts of my current system. So, I went out today, and bought a nice big hard drive, and set out to get it up and running tonight.
Extra monitor, check. Extra keyboard, check. Extra mouse, no problem. Plug everything in, go looking for the power cable and...no power cable. When C first got me the system, he asked if I needed one, and I was all, "Hell no, I've got a box full of stuff like that". Well, I was wrong. Not about the box - I've got a mess of various cables there, just not...one..single..power cable.
Argh. The power cable's not an option, y'know? If I needed to share the other stuff, I could have put in my switch box and used that, but there's no sharing a power cable.
So, I guess it'll wait another day, at least, before I get it done. There's no real hurry, but I'm really running out of room on my current system. I just found a BitTorrent for Season 1 of Batman Beyond, and I want to download it, dammit.
Argh.

Date: 2004-05-27 12:22 pm (UTC)Then, yes, Mimma's at noon tomorrow. I'll be free for maybe a couple of hours after that, but assume you'll be working. We're having dinner with Auntie and Uncle and Theresa tomorrow evening. If I knew for sure that we were going to be eating out, I'd invite you along. But there's at least a chance that T will be moved to cook.
Any chance you might be interested in finding somewhere to go dancing tomorrow night?
