More thoughts on Angel 5x11- Damage

After thinking a little, I've noticed a few other things about the episode.
As
butterfly pointed out, Joss does have a thing for psycho brunettes, doesn't he? Faith, Dru, Conner, River, now Dana. Hell, even Angel(us), if you get right down to it. They may have things in common, but they are all very distinct in their craziness, and in how they got that way. Dana was particularly interesting for me, because I kept seeing pieces of Faith in her. I don't think it was the actress, or even the writing - it had more to do with the framing of the shots, and the fact that she looked a little like Faith on a bender. So, I think the director was evoking that feel, at least for me. I think Spike was mostly seeing Dru, though.
I think I've clued in a little to why Dana was so creepy, for me. She was human, and damaged, and I think we were supposed to feel for her - I know I did, at least a little. And yet, she was killing everyone who tried to help her. Maybe that's the echo I have between her and Faith, as well - Faith had a knack for taking an offer of help and turning it into a weapon, especially just after killing the Mayor's aide (Alan?). So, I empathized with her (as I did with Faith in Bad Girls/Consequences, even Five by Five/ Sanctaury), but I was horrified by her at the same time. She was Creepy.
Gunn's starting to get a lot scary - is there anything that didn't get downloaded into his head during the season premiere? He's enjoying the game, for the game, at this point - I think he's totally lost sight of the fact that they're supposed to be doing good. I think he'll be the one to act as the corrupting force inside the group as the season progresses. Fred's a possibility for the role, but she doesn't seem to have gotten that caught up in the science, yet.
I didn't like Andrew last year on Buffy, and I liked him even less here. They took all his most irritating traits, and put them into one episode. Ugh. And, I know that the writers needed an exposition-dump for any Angel viewers who didn't watch Buffy, but it was very strange for him to be lecturing Angel and Spike (and Wesley) on slayers. They knew all this.
Again, that last conversation between Angel and Spike just blew me away. Mutant Enemy getting philosophical on the nature of evil! Woo-hoo!
