So, this morning I got up and headed out to the Downtown Knit Collective's Knitter's Frolic.

It was gonna be a short, inexpensive trip, I thought. I was just gonna hit a few booths and head home again.

My goal? I wanted some funky buttons for the cardigan I finished Tuesday night, and some Size 3 Addi Turbo circulars so that I could finally start that Icarus shawl I've been meaning to do.

Heh.

I got both, plus....
  • Cotton yarn for a cute little summer top, since, well, it's almost summer...

  • Socks that Rock sock yarn in a colorway called Stormy Weather.

  • Smooshy Sock yarn from a company called Dream in Colour

  • Two small batts of turquoise roving

  • Size 000 circular Turbos.
And, I don't even LIKE sock knitting, particularly. Apparently I'm gonna have to try that again. And, when I checked my Wedding Ring Shawl pattern when I got home, it's not 000 needles i needed, but just 0. Oh well, I'll find some use for it, I"m sure. *g* So I suppose it's just as well no-one had any gossamer weight yarn there - I still wouldn't be able to start it.

What I didn't buy? The $700 Louet Spinning Wheel that I spent an good 20 minutes on, trying out the feel and just spinning some roving that they had there next to it. It was so fun, and relaxing, just sitting there working the trestle, sliding my fingers along the roving, watching it spin. If she'd had another wheel there (she'd just sold the floor model), I might just have bought one.

(The whole house buying thing is weird there - I've got one half of my brain going - You're on a budget! You can't afford to drop $700 on a Spinning Wheel! And the other half going - But you'll have room! If she'd had a wheel there to sell, I don't know which half would have won.)

I didn't know you spun! I've never tried a wheel but have done tons of spinning on a drop spindle ... I think an Ashford purchase is in my near future, though. *shares your save/spend confusion*

This was my first time ever using a wheel, actually. I spin with a drop spindle, but it's very hit-or-miss with me. Sometimes, it's relaxing and enjoyable, othertimes it's frustrating as hell, y'know? So I tend to do it it spurts.

This wheel was a dream. It took me maybe 10 minutes with it to get to a point where there was smooth, consistent yarn flowing between my fingers. It would quickly, easily become absolutely mesmerizing, I think. *g* I'm actually probably very lucky she had none left, although I did take a card.

Spinning, huh? You know, I was just thinking that I need to find a really soothing pastime. Not that I'm sure I want a $700 spinning wheel. But soothing would be lovely.

It's a lovely way to spend time, really.

As soon as I get a wheel -- probably a portable one -- I want to start a "Spin and Grin" group. :-)

It is quite soothing, actually - the key to it is steady, repetitive motion, so that works quite easily as a mind-clearer, y'know?

And it was pretty easy to pick up, actually.
