I've been waffling for the last month on something.

My car desperately needs the clutch replaced. And I was waffling back and forth between replacing the clutch (at a cost of about $1000) or getting a new car. Problem is, I like my car. It's small, it's good on gas, it usually goes just fine, I've got a half decent stereo system in it. Sure, it's 8 years old,but that doesn't mean I have to throw it out, right?

But if it's gonna start falling apart, I don't want to be just throwing good money after bad, y'know?

And the new little Mazdas are cute.
Or maybe a Jetta
Or maybe even a slightly larger Toyota - my only real complaint about the Tercel is the amount of road noise I hear on the highway.
Or maybe..

You see the problem?

I put off making the decision, and the clutch just gets worse and worse, and one day it's gonna give out entirely, and I'm gonna be stuck somewhere, having to call a tow truck to limp into a garage.

So I finally bit the bullet and called the service department.
My poor little car is going in the shop next week to have the clutch replaced. No new car for me this year. *g*

You *know* you are only doing this so you can justify the cost of the new lap top, right??

Definitely a possibility...

If everything else is OK, the clutch isn't usually something that signifies the beginning of the end.

My Jetta is great on diesel (Sudbury-Ottawa return on one tank - $45). Clutches are not usually the beginning of the end (I replaced my Neon clutch after 50,000K (after Dad drove the car for a week) and Gerg is still driving it now its 9 years old and 200+K)

Everything else seems to be fine - I just got the brakes done, but wear & tear on the brakes is something I expect, y'know? Getting another few payment-free years out of this car would be really, really nice.

Hopefully, it'll just be the clutch, and then she'll be fine for a another while....

Heh. It seems like the Jetta's actually got the Tercel beat on mileage - I need about $50 in fuel to get to Ottawa return from Toronto. Maybe I should look at the Jetta again...

I don't really want to start making car payments again right now, though. If the clutch isn't the beginning of the end, I'd rather wait a few more years. I've only got about 125K km on it, so it should be good for another while.
