I just called to update my address with my car insurance company. I was expecting it to go up a little, since I am about twice as far from work and I thought distance from work was a big part of the formula.

Imagine my surprise when the agent tells me my premiums are about to drop by 25%. 25%, based on moving from one neighborhood to another. I think that's cool, and I guess I should have realized. I always feel so safe around there, where I didn't in my old place.

That's my bit of good news for the day. A little extra money in my pocket, to help cover the higher gas bill due to the extra miles. *g*

Yeah, distance to work is one thing, but they also count how safe your neighborhood is, and if you leave your car in a garage, driveway, or on the street. Hmm...I should check whether my insurance guy knows I have a garage now...

I'm like you, I feel much safer in the hood then when we lived with you, people are more friendly and will actually say hi to me on the street.

That’s cool. Has the "little town" feel. You start seeing the same people repeatedly. Its just natural that you say Hi.

As your car gets older you may wish to seriously consider dropping collision & theft insurance. This is because the insurance company will only pay you the depreciated value of the car. My Acclaim has a book value of under $2000, so if I'm in any kind of significant accident, the insurance company is going to write it off and send me a small cheque.
