I really liked both shows last night. Both had some excellent dialog, some good characterization, and very few WTF? moments.

Things I really liked about the episode:

  • Lois Lane is Chloe's cousin. That's a bit of fanon that I never expected to be explicitly confirmed. What I really liked, though, is the hint that Chloe is the canon Lois, since that name is offered as a pseudonum for her writing. The story was the kind of story the Lois was famous for writing, too. Although, if they do have her as Lois, she'd have to be really, truly dumb not to make the Clark-Superman connection.
  • Adam's smackdown of Lana. It's about time someone called her on her "poor, poor me" routine. It makes sense that it would have to be an outsider who does it as well - Smallville residents have been accepting it for so long that anything else would be jarring to them.
  • The conversation between Chloe and Clark. Chloe offers a sincere apology for the mess she made with Lionel, and Clark shows enough empathy to accept it. Allison Mack just rocked that scene.
  • Slinky Lex! He was flirting so hard with Molly, in the opning scene, and then basically managed to flirt her weapon away from her. I mean, really - he stole it while she was getting him some coffee? He's such a charmer. And, we finally get an answer to whether or not the memory wipe worked, and that fact that he'll do just about anything to regain the lost 7 weeks.
  • No Clark-Lana coda scene! I didn't realize how truly irritated I was by those constant last scenes between Clark & Lana until we get an episode without one, and end up with an ending that feels much more natural.

And, over on Angel...

I've less to say here, other than that the episode worked for me. Dana was truly creepy, and since I wasn't sure that empowering all potential slayers was a great idea back when it happened in May, this episode kinda justified my concern.

What I absolutely loved, though, was the final conversation between Angel & Spike. I don't think that Spike's ever really thought about the victims he's left behind, before. The idea that evil is evil, whether it's done for the art of it like Angel, or just done to get by like Spike also seemed to be a new thought for him. The very last exchange:

    Spike: "She's a monster."
    Angel: "She's an innocent victim."
    Spike: "So were we."

seemed particularly resonant, with both of them.

A good night of TV.
