Getting ready to move

This is starting to get a little scary - I still don't have a place to live in 6 weeks. Gulp! I've got four appointments scheduled for tomorrow, and hopefully, one of those will be good. I'd really like to have that weight off my mind, anyway.

In the meantime, I'm starting to get ready to get rid of stuff. I have way too much for an apartment downtown. I'm keeping my furniture, but all the stuff I've just managed to accumulate over the years? I think it's gonna go.

My plan for Sunday is to do a serious weeding-out of my books, and any book that hasn't been re-read since I bought it is going. The very thought of getting rid of books has me nauseous, though. I think I may bring the term "pack-rat" to a whole new level. *g* The Bujold will stay, the Guy Kay will stay, the Nora Roberts will stay. That's pretty much all that's safe, right now.

In that vein - does anyone have any idea what I can do with an almost-entire collection of the Columbia House videotapes for Star Trek and Star Trek:TNG? The only one I'm missing is Encounter at Farpoint, I believe. I can't believe I've got about $3000 (then, anyway - nowadays they're not worth much at all) worth of videotapes sitting in boxes in my closet. If I'd known about DVDs I'd never have started buying them. *g* I'd consider eBay, but the shipping costs would be kinda huge.

Comic books: to stay or to go is my next dilemma....

Comic books: to stay or to go is my next dilemma....

Comics, did I hear comics? Mmmm comics. I don't have much else to add except if you don't keep them they better go to a good home or I'll cry. :)

If they go, then they'll go to a good home, I promise. I'm not sure what I'd do, actually - about the only thing I'd be willing to get rid of, most likely, is the last couple of years of X-Men. My Sandman are staying, as are my Delano & Ennis Hellblazers - that I know for sure. I want to keep all the JMS stuff, and the Books of Magic, and...

See, this is my problem. Total Packrat. *g*

I would go nuts having to decide which comics of mine to keep and which to let go. But then I have 17 thousand of them so it would be a pretty daunting task :)

Books? Did I hear something about books going? I'm ALWAYS happy to provide a home to any sf/f books that you're disposing of. I'll be in town, probably with a car, for Ad Astra -- do you need to dispose of them before then? If not, I'll happily take them away then...

I won't need them gone until sometime in April, so that works. I'm not sure how I'm getting rid of them, though - it could easily be 400-500 books we're talking about here. I don't think they'll all fit in your car. *g*

I'm probably going to try to sell them first - I know a guy who runs a SF used bookstore, so I think I'll have him come take a look once I figure out what's going. I will however, keep you in mind if selling doesn't work out. *g*

That's a good idea...

I wonder what's involved, if I'd have to declare GST and such. IS there GST on used books?

I think I'll do a little research.

Trunk, back seat, front seat. You can get a lot of books into a car. :) Passengers don't matter, they can be left behind... we're talking about books here.

Yeah, in that volume, selling is probably a good thought.

Good thing you have [livejournal.com profile] mycrazyhair as a friend. I'm sure she can give you ALL kinds of great advice/support for getting rid of just about anything. She is the MASTER at downsizing! *g*

She is good at it, yes.

Her advice - ask "Does this bring me joy?" If the answer is "no", then out it goes.

In the case of books, for me it'll be - Have I ever reread it? If not, that's a definite go. Then I'll probably try and figure out if I've reread it in the last 2 years, and if not, it'll go. That should actually leave me with a very fairly short list of books that I truly love. Well, here's hoping, anyway.

Good luck! I know if it was me and I had to get rid of books, I'd be a miserable failure. But YOU CAN DO IT!! I have faith! *g*
