An hour left before the weekend, and I figure it's time for some Good Things:
  • An hour left until the weekend, natch!

  • lunch with the girls tomorrow

  • A really productive week at work. My to-do list is still longer than it was on Monday, but I got 5 incidents closed yesterday alone, and that makes this a good week

  • My garden is growing. The hostas are getting bigger, all the tree type plants came back really well, and even the asiatic lilies survived the winter - I can't wait until they bud and bloom! (What? It's my first year with a garden to watch bloom in 20 years!)

  • I managed to snag a ticket home for a week this summer on points, and I've even got the approved vacation time for it. Two whole weeks off, one in Newfoundland, and one here. Yay!

So, what's going well in your world?

What a lovely day it is outside.

We were up and out early, tackling the snow piled up in our driveway. Now, normally, I'm not a huge fan of shoveling snow. This morning, though? It felt like a block party. It's such a beautiful day outside, and everyone was out, talking, laughing, helping each other out. I met more neighbors today than I have in the the three months since I moved in. The kids next door were having a ball, using crazy carpets to go down the banks into the yards, having snowball fights, just pushing each other into the snow. This is starting to feel like a neighborhood, and I think it's gonna be a good one.

There's something about the sound of a bunch of kids screaming in laughter, even at 10 in the morning, that just makes a day seem brighter, y'know?

For those at the party a week ago, M finally managed to catch a few pictures of the turkey that did such a good job of terrorizing him last week. There's nothing in the pictures to give scale, but yeah, he's pretty big. This turkey just keeps wandering through the yard. It's actually kinda weird. *g*

This Flickr thing could get addictive. Blogging from it's not as easy as I'd like, though.

The snow last weekend made for some pretty sights out near Mike's place. So, when we took the dogs for a walk between the snow squalls on Sunday, I took my camera with me. We lucked out, having the snow on Saturday - if it had happened any earlier in the week, the trails would have been groomed for cross-country skiing, and that would have meant that we shouldn't walk on them.

M & I just went for a bike ride through the Conservation Area behind his place. It was fun - I'm starting to get used to the feel & balance of biking again, after 20 years or so. It was a lot harder work than the ride last week, though - that was on an old rail trail, so the pathways were wide, and pretty level. The one here? Not so much, on either count.

It's kinda weird - I remember how to bike, certainly, but I'm having trouble finding my center of gravity while riding. I slow almost to a stop when I'm going around curves, and that's unnecessary. Then, on the way back to the house today, I lost confidence on a very narrow section of the path along a hillside, and went splat!

No real damage done - I picked up a few splinters, but that's about it. But, according to my local expert (that'd be M) my new bike has now officially been christened. A mountain bike isn't really yours until the first fall. *g*

I'm off shortly to spend the weekend camping in Algonquin Park. I have bug spray, sunscreen, antihistamines, beer, and a swimsuit. Oh, and a tent. That's all I need, right? *g*

Truth be told, I'm really looking forward to it. We're going biking tonight and/or tomorrow, and that should be a lot of fun. Plus, we'll be far enough north that we may be able to see some of the Northern lights. I think the weekend after Solstice is a great time to be doing this ... Lots of daylight, warm weather (put not the oppressive heat of August), and I'm hoping that once the sun does go down, we'll actually be able to see the night sky.

There something about a listening to a cracking campfire while leaning back and looking at the night sky that just makes me feel...peaceful.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. *g*

I just spent an hour and a half out cross-country skiing. I've never done it before, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. I went Splat! seven times (I think), which is less than once every 10 minutes. I don't think that's too bad, for a rank beginner.

I wish I could say that I got better as the day went on, but the most spectatular of the splat!s happened as we were approaching the chalet to return our skis and leave. I felt myself falling forward and tried to tuck-and-roll. That may work in gymnastics, but when you've got planks attached to your feet? The roll doesn't work so well. *g*

Anyway, it was fun. I'll definitely be doing it again. It was undoubtedly the best workout I've had in a long, long while, and it was enjoyable. *g*

Living in Canada, it's about time I tried some outdoor winter sports. If I can find something I like, then maybe I won't hate winter. Now, if I can just find the time to try snowboarding...
